Glacier Bay National Park Hiking

The National Park Service Headquarters are stationed inside the park, allowing plenty of opportunities for guided hikes with Park Service Interpreters.  Daily hikes consist of 1-2 mile loops around the lodge and along the beaches.  For something more adventurous, there are plenty of trails throughout Glacier Bay National Park to explore.  We are happy to point you in the right direction and help you obtain maps of these trail systems.

 TrailDistance
Time
Description
Forest Loop
1 mile
1 hr
Begins at Glacier Bay Lodge and ends near the dock.  Easy.  There are a couple of benches along the way.  The trail winds through a pond-studded spruce/hemlock forest for one half mile, then descends to the beach.  I really enjoyed the hike when I took it with my wife and 4 year old.
Bartlett River
4 mile
half day
The trail is not difficult but has a few muddy spots during rainy periods.  It meanders along an intertidal lagoon, through the forest, then emerges and ends at the Bartlett River estuary.
Bartlett Lake
6 mile
half day
This trail branches off from the Bartlett River Trail about one quarter mile from the Gustavus Road. It winds through temperate rainforest and leads to Bartlett Lake.

D-3 1957 Plane Crash

On Saturday, November 23rd, 1957, a National Guard, twin engine Douglas C-47 crashed while attempting to land in bad weather and low fuel.  Much of the plane is still intact and can be seen by taking a short hike to the plane crash.  This 1/4 mile hike is great for an afternoon hike or even after dinner when the sun stays out longer in the early Summer.  For the full story of the1957 Gustavus plane crash click here.

Hiking Around Glacier Bay Country Inn

The Inn rests on 160 acres of beautiful forest and offers great hiking opportunities for one who wishes to get out and walk through the forest and see beautiful flowers, wildlife, pick berries, or just get some exercise.
